Alcohol is a Major Cause of Death

Recent news shows that moderate drinking can benefit one’s health, but far too many people consume alcohol to excess. A government study reported in Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report shows that excess alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable death after tobacco and poor eating habits. Fewer than half of the deaths are directly related to diseases associated with alcohol such as cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, and cancer. Most of these preventable deaths are due to accidents such as car crashes.

It may take less than you think to put yourself at risk. For women it only takes more than one drink per day and for men more than 2 drinks per day to be considered at risk as someone who drinks to excess.
