Just One Puff

DNA damage was detected after just one puff of a cigarette; according to a recent study that looked at the effects of very small amounts of smoke. Human chromosomes were mutated by very little exposure to cigarette smoke in tests done by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. The risks of cancer and heart disease may not be due to just one puff, but the fact that DNA damage can be seen from such slight exposure may be reason enough to keep people from ever starting the habit that has proven links to those diseases.
