Mad Cow Disease

With Labor Day approaching and grills being fired up all over the country, is mad cow disease still a threat? Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) was most recently found in our country in December of 2003 in Washington State. The USDA has gone to great lengths to test cattle and recall any meat that may be questionable. BSE is not transferable through the milk supply, so all dairy products may be considered safe. The safest cuts of beef to eat include boneless steaks, chops, and roasts or meat from grass-fed and organic cattle. Consumers with any questions or concerns should call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1 (888) MPHotline from 10am-4pm (EST) Monday through Friday.
